How the PurifierData score works
Every model in the index gets a single 1–5 PurifierData score. No single number tells the whole story about an air purifier, so the score takes a holistic view — blending four dimensions that each catch a different way a purifier can be the wrong choice.
- Dimension 1Owner sentiment
- Dimension 2Recommendations
- Dimension 3Specs, side by side
- Dimension 4Value
The exact weighting is our own recipe, but the principle is simple: a model has to earn it on all four fronts. Great specs with unhappy owners, or glowing reviews behind weak CADR, both show up in the score.
Why owner reviews are the reality check
Spec sheets describe how a purifier performs in a lab. Owners describe how it performs in a bedroom at 2 a.m., next to a litter box, through wildfire season. We treat those real-world experiences as the check on the published numbers: if a model claims whisper-quiet operation but owners complain about fan hum, or claims whole-room coverage but owners say it never catches up, that gap matters more than the marketing.
That's why every model page pairs its spec table with what owners actually say — the specs tell you what should happen, and the reviews tell you what does.
Reported vs. tested: certifications
To be clear: we don't lab-test purifiers ourselves. What we do is track which models have been tested by the bodies that can — so you always know whether a number is manufacturer-reported or independently verified.
AHAM Verifide means CADR and room-size claims were confirmed in an independent lab. CARB certification means ozone emissions stay below California's strict safety threshold. Energy Star means verified efficiency for a device that runs 24/7. A model missing AHAM or CARB is asking you to take its word for it — and we'll always show you which is which.
